Tom, thank you for all the great info and ideas. My plan runs with West to the left, therefore looking from the South as I do want to include the bluff backdrop. I have built hidden staging to the East and now have a better idea what trains to run on and off. I debated over the AB&B but now see how it can be added in for operations and I like some of the ideas used on the LK&O as to Akron operations/modeling. I am including Spencer for its interchange (hidden again). I was trying to do the C CC&StL where it ran parallel to the AC&Y but could not work in how to drop the CCC&StL off to the South. So instead I am doing the interchange at New London, one at New Washington (following Bill Darnaby's idea for the narrow shelf area). I am doing the stone business in Carey as a stand alone switching industry. I do like the idea of NOT modeling Delphos and doing Columbus Grove and Bluffton, and doing Delphos as a hidden staged area.

Hew, now I need someone to paint an H15-44 & a few H16-44's for me in UP Armour Yellow/Black. Anyone recommend a custom painter??

The East end of the yard, in addition to yard crews had a local on duty at either 1500 or 1700 hrs (I can't remember which) that switched at Wiemers and then up the Gilchrest Lead switching ACME, ORR, Sieblerling Rubber, General Tire, BF Goodrich, Montgomery Wards, Schneiers Fish, Burger Iron, Rubber Maid, Bettsy Ross Foods, and Oniel's. Another crew would have gone to Modagore and worked the WLE transfer, Reed Brothers, Akron Brick and Block, Carter Lumber, and Chemical Associates.

Most AC&Y fans and modelers would be surprised to know that the Brittain engine terminal had a much different arrangement before addition of the diesel shop and installation of a 90' turntable in the mid-1940's. The turntable before was just 75' in length and the roundhouse was eleven stalls. Another area that was changed was the rip track alignment. In the drawing and photos, note that the rip tracks were curved, not tangent (straight) as they are today. Altogether, these features are what make AC&Y's Brittain yard one of the more interesting small railroad terminals in the nation.

EXTENSION OF TRACKS ELIMINATES BOTTLENECK AT BRITTAIN YARD - from the September 1956 AC&Y Employee News magazine

Ninety-Seven On Nine, Ninety-Four On Eight... The Problem's Gone, Now Trains Aren't Late

"An attempt to put two long trains on two short tracks creates a problem! When both trains have over-lapping schedules, it's a dilemma!"

"For several years (AC&Y) Trains No. 97 and 94 had been competing for Tracks 8 and 9 at the Brittain classification yard. Prior to that time, when trains were shorter and schedules not so close, one track was used as both a departure track for one train and also as a receiving track for the other. This condition no longer exists. Previously, on many mornings, the eastbound train was ready to come into the yard before the westbound train was ready to depart. Ninety-Four (eastbound trains are even numbered and westbound are odd numbered) had to be held out before it could be handled.

Cars handled in the yard are as great as were handled in the past. The days when AC&Y handled blocks of cars with industrial coal are gone. A 70-car train today means 70 switches except for empties. Orders for empties mean switching of each car as customers require special sizes, capacities, heights and lengths. This increase in switching necessitates additional tracks or more time and more doubling together. It reached the point where further efficiency in car handling required physical improvements.

First, it was suggested that a new track be installed; but, costly heavy grading and culvert extensions ruled out this option. This summer (1956), at an estimated cost of $58,350, the two tracks are being extended easterly to permit assembling two trains each with 100 cars. When both extensions are complete, No. 97 can be built up on Track 9 while No. 8 is open to take care of (receive) No. 94 (inbound from Delphos).

Where did the AC&Y load this TOFC traffic? Did they have a ramp in the yard somewhere?

The ramp was at the east end of the yard on the north side. It is still there in the weeds.

Was this east of the N Canton Rd overpass, or more in the area of the abandoned industry west of the gravel company? I've been searching on both google maps & bing maps, but can't locate it via aerial photography. Thanks!

I answered my own question - I finally found it once I switched from Aerial view to Bird's Eye view in Bing Maps - it's located between the gravel company lead and the yard ladder, east of the abandoned industry spot.

Here's a photo of the TOFC loading ramp at the east end of Brittain yard (in its better days). The Society Archive, now donated to the University of Akron, contains an AFE file with excellent construction blueprints of the ramp... a modelers dream. REL
