Construction of the LK&O Railroad

Don't let the railroad name fool you, the LK&O is really 80% AC&Y plus 20% of two other LDEs that are important to me. The full name is the Lapeer Kitzmiller and Ohio RR. The Ohio portion is AC&Y Brittain Yard, Spur 4 to General Tire, along with a freelanced Goodyear/Firestone/General Tire complex. A detailed explanation is here: http://www.lkorailroad.com/about/

This thread is started to document my progress for those who may be interested in following along. There aren't many AC&Y modelers on the generic forums so it is nice to be amongst "like-minded people" as the banner says.

My work began in Jan 2010 starting with a near empty 2000 sq ft basement. The appropriations council (my wife) granted 1/3 of the space for railroad right-of-way. 2010 and first half 2011 were spent finishing the basement - sheet rock, electrical, paint etc. Q3-Q4 2011 and 2012 thus far were spent on suspended ceiling, building the major backdrop support structure, and a layout lighting system. Hopefully, the remainder of 2012 will see the beginning of bench work. My goal is to be ready for laying the first piece of track by Dec 31.

Here are a few photos of the train room as it exists May 2012. More photos and detailed posts are continuously updated on the LK&O blog site. The most recent post can always be found at http://www.lkorailroad.com. Thanks for following along!

LKandO your backdrops and valence look great, along with your room preparation. We will look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks for the compliments Matt. The name is Alan by the way. I have my signature line data filled in but it isn't appearing in my posts for some reason. I'll eventually figure out what I am doing wrong.

Made a bit more progress. The ceiling is finished finally. Light panels over layout are next. Work pace will pick up once summer is over.

Not many model railroad layouts begin with the "total scene" as you have, Alan... clearly very precise work on the backdrop, ceiling and valence. It takes real vision and patience to overcome the desire to simply "start running trains".... and, tackle the important stuff later!

Am most interested on your choice of layout lighting behind the valence. I'm using (still experimenting) with a variety of 48" shop light fixtures with color corrected (balanced) florescent bulbs. The jury is still out. Keep us posted on your layout construction techniques. Also, how high will your bench work be off the floor? Bob

Bob, my lighting behind the valance is a combination of 5000K CFL lamps on 2' centers along with Series 5050-300 LEDs 6500K mounted to the front angle. Complete descriptions can be found here: http://www.lkorailroad.com/category/layout-lighting/
My top deck will be 53" zero elevation, bottom deck will be 31-1/2" zero elevation. Details here: http://www.lkorailroad.com/double-deck-arrangement/
Thanks for the compliments.

Got started fitting and installing the lighting panels over the layout. Bob, here is a picture that shows well how the LEDs are being used in conjunction with the CFLs.
